The Role of the Imam of the Congregation in Encouraging Public Participation in Congregational Prayer and the Mosque: With an Emphasis on the Views of the Supreme Leader of Iran

Abstract

This research examines the role and position of the congregational prayer leader (Imam al-Jama'ah) as a spiritual and social leader in managing mosque affairs and nurturing faithful and revolutionary generations. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the key characteristics of a successful prayer leader across two dimensions—personality and strategy—including expansiveness of chest (forbearance), good temperament, receptivity to criticism, time management, and delegation of tasks, as well as their impact on his performance in guiding affairs and attracting the younger generation. Conducted through a descriptive-analytical method, this study utilizes Quranic teachings, Islamic traditions, and the viewpoints of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution. The results indicate that the success of a prayer leader depends on his ability to establish effective communication with the public, accept constructive criticism, and delegate responsibilities to the youth to foster their talents and sense of accountability. Furthermore, possessing good character and forbearance in the face of challenges not only enhances mosque management but also paves the way for increasing public trust and strengthening the spiritual standing of the Imam among the congregants. The prayer leader must play an active role in the moral and social education of individuals by formulating purposeful programs and utilizing available capacities. This, while improving mosque management, leads to the strengthening of social bonds and the consolidation of religious values within society.
