Abstract
In the contemporary era, cyberspace and smartphones have become an inseparable part of adolescents’ lives. Despite its numerous opportunities, this environment—due to its all-encompassing attractiveness and attention-maximizing design—has become one of the major challenges for families and educational systems. Excessive use of this space is associated with consequences such as reduced physical activity, social isolation, changes in cognitive structure and priorities, and exposure to moral corruption. Prohibitive approaches such as cutting off internet access, confiscating phones, or punishment are not only ineffective but also lead to adolescent resistance, behavioral duality, and emotional distancing from parents. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method based on the analysis of scholars’ and educational experts’ perspectives. From the viewpoint of Islamic educational foundations, and considering its definitions, goals, and principles regarding human beings, individuals cannot be restrained, forced into actions, or temporarily directed through indoctrination. Instead, attention must be given to human potentials and the creation of conditions for their development. Potentials such as thinking, reflection, and reasoning in adolescents, along with strengthening self-confidence, are identified as key elements in addressing social harms. The aim of this article is to present an Islamic education–based approach to dealing with adolescents’ excessive use of cyberspace. Grounded in Islamic educational principles—particularly the concepts of reflection (tadabbur) and reasoning (ta‘aqqul)—the proposed model seeks to strengthen adolescents’ intellectual identity, responsibility, and self-confidence.
